Women arrested attempting to smuggle contraband

Two Detroit-area women were arrested after attempting to smuggle contraband into Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater.

State police troopers were contacted in February 2019 about a package sent via FedEx to the prison. Hidden inside the package were drugs and cell phones intended for prisoners.

A joint investigation was started with the Michigan Department of Corrections, and an inmate and two women, both from the Detroit area, were involved in the situation.

The 25-year-old inmate has since been transferred to Ionia. He has been charged with felony conspiracy to smuggle contraband into a prison. The two females, a 35-year-old from Dearborn and a 33-year-old from Detroit, have been charged with felony conspiracy to commit forgery and felony conspiracy to smuggle contraband into a prison.

The women were arrested Tuesday and taken to the Branch County Jail.
