Out and About – Week of August 9th

Last week, I shared some helpful hints on interior painting. I am not a professional painter, but I have done my share of painting and have paint specks on my glasses to prove it.

When painting a room, you’ll need both a paint brush and several different types of paint rollers. A paint brush is great for trim-work and corners. I’ve known a few professional painters who can use a roller for everything. He/She is a true artist when it comes to slapping on the paint. They can have an entire room done, before I can finish with the ceiling. Oh well, here are some hints you’ll want to consider when painting that room.

It’s usually best to paint the ceiling first. That way gravity will help with the splatters. It can be quite upsetting to have paint from the ceiling splatter on a freshly painted wall.
If you’re interrupted while working with latex paint, slip your paintbrush or roller into a plastic bag, then seal it with a plastic tie, or several turns of a string. The brush or roller will stay moist until you can resume painting.
The proper way to load a brush with paint is to dip only one-third of the bristles in the paint. If there’s room in the can, tap the brush gently on the can’s interior side instead of the rim.
If you’ve taken too long of a break, and the bristles of your brush have stiffened, lather them with a hair conditioner, then rinse thoroughly.
Before using a paint roller, line your roller pan with a plastic bag or aluminum foil. When you finish, throw the bag or foil away. You’ll have less mess to clean up.
When your brush becomes too frayed to paint effectively, clip off the tips of its bristles and use the brush for dusting delicate objects. It will come in handy when you decide to detail the interior of your car or truck. For really stiff bristles, use the brush for applying liquid detergent to those tough stains on clothes.
Life needs more laughs these days, so here are five ways to at least make yourself chuckle a little:

At lunch time, sit in your parked car on a busy street, and wear sunglasses. Take a hair dryer and point it at passing cars. It will be interesting to see how many drivers slow down.
When you go out to eat, order a Diet Water with a serious face.
When you go through a drive-thru eatery, ask that your order be “To Go”.
When the money comes out of the ATM, yell out “I Won!, I Won!”.
In the Memo field of all your checks, write “For Smuggling Diamonds”.
Here are some geography facts that might come in handy the next time the conversation starts to become uninteresting:

Antarctica is the only land on our planet that is not owned by any country.
Brazil got its name from the nut, not the other way around.
Canada has more lakes than the rest of the world combined.
There are no natural lakes in the state of Ohio, everyone is man-made.
