In Michigan, we have the usual four seasons, with one exception. We have fall, winter, spring, and then there is “Road Construction”. I’ve often wondered why they do this construction during the summer months. The obvious answer is because this is when the weather is the best to get the job done. Another reason is because this is when most people do the heavy traveling. Traveling the highways to get to that vacation spa should be a joyous occasion. Highway construction’s purpose is to give us that touch of reality. The REAL world.
If you are planning to travel throughout St. Joseph County this summer and fall, here are some areas where road construction will be in full swing. You might want to avoid these areas unless you enjoy watching workers sweat and having your vehicle overheat:
M-103 from the Michigan/Indiana state line to Cecelia Street in Mottville.
M-66 between the north junction with M-86 and Spring Creek Road near Colon.
US-12 from Klinger Lake Road to M-66 (Centreville Road) in Sturgis.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will be resurfacing 7.5 miles of trunk-lines here in St. Joseph County. There will be single-lane closures with lane shifts and traffic regulators. This 1.6 million dollar investment includes milling and asphalt resurfacing, concrete sidewalk improvements and pavement markings. The project will improve safety and ride quality for motorists, improve accessibility and safety for pedestrians, and will also extend the life of the roadways. The project should finish Friday, October 29. Just another example of your tax dollars at work.
Life is short, so lick the bowl.
The St. Joseph County Historical Society cordially invites you to stop by any Friday, from now through November 19, and enjoy “A River Running Through”. This historical photographic retrospective will enlighten you on the bridges, dams and floods of St. Joseph County. The exhibit is available on Fridays, from 10 AM – 4 PM. The Historical Society is located at 34 North Main Street in historic downtown Three Rivers
Another way to get Out and About is to head over to the Covered Bridge Farm, 56705 Covered Bridge Road, just outside of Three Rivers, on Saturday, August 28, from 3 PM – 9 PM. This is a great opportunity to take the family out and help celebrate the St. Joseph River. Admission is just a donation of your choice. Activities include a PBS film documentary on the history of the St. Joseph River. The film will be presented at 4:30 PM. Live music will start after the film and will continue until 9 PM. Of course there will be plenty of burgers, brats, chips and various brews. There will also be games for children of all ages, including cornhole and a bouncy house.
The village of Marcellus would like to invite everyone over for their “Bluegill Frolic”. This annual event gets underway this Friday and Saturday, August 20 and 21. Events include a car and bike show, fishing contest, fish fry, face painting, rides, beer tent, vendors and live music. You won’t want to miss the parade on Saturday at 10 AM.
