A third St. Joseph County school district is now looking for a permanent superintendent.
Colon Community Schools Board of Education on Monday accepted the resignation of Penny Brockway. The 52-year-old Brockway was in the midst of her fifth year in Colon.
Colon joins Three Rivers and Centreville as St. Joseph County school districts looking for permanent superintendents. Colon’s board on Monday agreed to offer a contract to Marty Chard as interim superintendent.
Chard retired more than a decade ago after serving several years as superintendent at Union City. He has since taken on the role of interim superintendent in a number of districts, including Homer, Litchfield and Tekonsha.
Board president Deb Bordner said Chard will be available to the district starting Tuesday. Brockway’s final day is Monday. Bordner said contract details, including pay and number of days he’ll be required to work, will be ironed out this week.
Regarding the district’s search for a permanent superintendent, the board agreed to work with Michigan Leadership Institute. It entertained proposals from MLI, Michigan Association of School Boards, and TD & Associates.
Bordner said under ideal circumstances, the district would land an experienced superintendent before the end of the current school year.
