Evelyn Swartz, 99

Evelyn A. Swartz, 99, of Marcellus, passed away Monday morning, Nov. 9, 2009 at her residence following a four-month illness.

She was born Nov. 5, 1910 in Marcellus Township, the daughter of Fred and Cora A. (Wolfe) Butchbaker. On Sept. 11, 1932 in Marcellus she married Edwin H. Swartz who preceded her in death on Oct. 7, 2002.

She graduated from Marcellus High School in 1929 and attended Davenport College in Grand Rapids. She was a charter member of the Volinia Baptist Church and taught Sunday school for 40 years. In her church she formerly was a deaconess, choir leader, leader of junior church and a co-leader of the pioneer girls’ club.

Surviving are two sons, Arlen R. (Patricia) Swartz of Dowagiac and Ronald C. (Patricia) Swartz of Marcellus; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Mary Butchbaker and Erma Swartz; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 13, in the Volinia Baptist Church with Dr. Thomas G. Stout and Pastor Tim Perry officiating. Burial will follow in Marcellus Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the Cass County Council on Aging or the Borgess Visiting Nurse and Hospice.  Envelopes are available at the Mater Funeral Home in Marcellus.
