Mary Mettler, 88

Mary Ann Mettler, age 88, of Sturgis, passed away early Monday morning, May 22, 2023 at Parkview Randallia Hospital in Fort Wayne.

She was born December 23, 1934 in Sturgis, daughter of the late Rudolph and Alma (Miller) Quirin.

Mary was a lifelong Sturgis resident of Sturgis and a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1953.

On June 15, 1958 she married Duane E. Mettler at the First Baptist Church in Sturgis. He preceded her in death November 4, 1998.

Mary retired from Willer’s Shoes in Sturgis following many years of dedicated employment. She had also worker at the Citizens State Bank in Sturgis and the A&P grocery store both in Sturgis.

She was a lifelong active member of the First Baptist Church in Sturgis where she taught Sunday school and was always ready to help in the kitchen for Wednesday night dinners and funeral luncheons.

Mary enjoyed the monthly lunches with high school graduates, playing cards, games, knitting, crocheting and gardening. Her tomatoes and cucumbers will be forever missed by her family. Mary had involvements and hobbies, but what she truly cherished was time spent with her entire family especially her grandchildren. She could always be found at any of their sporting events and many activities.

She is survived by her twin-daughters: Barbara (Lyle) Klopfenstein of LaGrange and Deborah Klopfenstein of Howe; son: Dean (Missy) Mettler of Sturgis; grandchildren: Charlie ( fiancée Lucy Blesch) Klopfenstein of Howe, Carl Klopfenstein and Paul Klopfenstein both of LaGrange, Haley Mettler, Colin Mettler and Austin Mettler all of Sturgis; sister: Kathaleen Studeman of Sturgis; brothers: Rudy (Pamela) Quirin and Carl (Judi) Quirin both of Sturgis and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and granddaughter: Olivia Mettler, son-in-law: Tony Klopfenstein and sister: Betty Finnerman Schlagheck.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday at the Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 807 E. Chicago Rd. in Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of Mary Mettler will be held at 12:00 P.M. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Sturgis. The Rev. Doug Noonkester will officiate. A continued time of fellowship and the sharing of a meal will follow the service. A graveside committal will take place at 3:00 Saturday at Lakeview Cemetery in Quincy.
