It’s not an illusion or a sleight of hand; the Kalamazoo Wings have announced that defenseman Collin Saccoman will be returning for the upcoming season.
For the 26-year old native of Stillwater, MN, signing with the K-Wings for a third season is exciting.
“I have loved it here ever since I first came aboard two seasons ago,” said Saccoman. “I think they run a first-class hockey organization and treat the players very well.”
Saccoman is grateful that the K-Wings asked him back.
“At the end of last year’s season, I met with the coaching staff to discuss coming back for the next season,” Saccoman said. “Thankfully the feeling was mutual, and I get the chance to play the game I love with an organization that is determined to win.”
When Saccoman first signed with the K-Wings in 2021, he was coming off an injury. Much to his delight, Saccoman made it through camp and started the season with the K-Wings, “However, after 20 games, I had another bad injury, which delayed my playing time again,” Saccoman said. “Even though it sucked, the K-Wings were more than supportive during my recovery and gave me another opportunity to play the following season.”
Last season, Saccoman played in 60 games, netted four goals and 17 assists, was named as the K-Wings Defenseman of the Year, and earned the Community Service Award.
“Last year ended earlier than we would have liked, but it just makes you hungrier the following season,” Saccoman said. “However, getting those awards at the end of the season made the early ending a little better. The hockey community in Kalamazoo is absolutely awesome and even before the awards I loved playing in front of our crowds. The energy, excitement, and passion the fans come with is exhilarating, which made receiving those awards that much sweeter.”
With the K-Wings failing to make the postseason for the second consecutive year, Saccoman feels that, in order to change the outcome, everyone needs to buy into the system and keep those habits every night.
“Last year, I think we were inconsistent with how we would play partly due to when we did play well we wouldn’t get rewarded for those efforts, which can be defeating at times,” Saccoman said. “Moving forward, the guys that are being brought in, I think, are high-caliber players and I am excited to win games with them.”
Head coach and Director of Hockey Operations Joel Martin feels that Saccoman is one of those players. “Collin Saccoman is a warrior and a leader on and off the ice,” said Martin in a statement released by the team. “He’s a driver of our culture from blocked shots to community involvement.“
Saccoman said the comments by Martin “pack and punch” and add motivation to his game rather than pressure.
“Coach Martin, since my first season, has helped my transition and progression in professional hockey, which has helped me find the areas and roles I can play to help us win hockey games.”
Off the ice, Saccoman stays busy within the community.
“I think it’s important for players to get out in the community and serve because that is what a good community does,” Saccoman said. “I think it is good for players to get out in the community to learn about the place and its people.”
Having worked as a paraprofessional and substitute teacher for some time, Saccoman enjoys visiting area schools, where he is able to interact with students by reading and performing magic.
Saccoman, who started doing magic in high school, practices his craft during the team’s road trips.
“If I had to use hockey terms to describe the level I am at with magic, I am probably in juniors for magic,” Saccoman said.
“Magic is the best way to break down any walls socially,” he added. “I wouldn’t say I could ever make money off of it but I do have a passion for doing it and get a kick out of the reactions.”
Saccoman is ready for the upcoming season and hitting the ice with teammates, both old and new.
“I think the biggest thing to expect this season is determination,” Saccoman said. “The guys being brought in are coming for a reason. They are high caliber and want to win. With the two seasons I have been here, and we haven’t made the playoffs yet, I’m ready to win.”
