Animal Control Board begins fundraiser

Members of the St. Joseph County Animal Control Board have started the agency’s 2019 holiday fundraiser. One injured in Cass County crash

Cass County deputies responded over the weekend to a two-vehicle collision in Jefferson Township. Sheriff Richard Behnke said deputies were dispatched shortly before 4:30 p.m. Sunday to the intersection of M-62 and Hospital Road. Investigators found that 28-year-old Elkhart resident Nathan Herman was southbound on M-62. A southwestern Michigan man has been sentenced to a year in jail for his 16-year-old son’s fatal drug overdose. Prosecutors accused Gary Birkhead of knowingly allowing his son to use illicit drugs over two years. He pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in November.
